As I decided to leave Beijing, the city where I had lived and worked for nine years, the global outbreak of COVID-19 struck. After returning from my hometown to Beijing, we were informed that we would need to quarantine at home for a while, forcing us to delay our moving plans.
During this period of isolation, I began to notice the ordinary things around me that I had previously overlooked. They might be gifts from others, tools I had grown accustomed to using, impulsive purchases with little practical use, or even the signs and window displays of a store I frequently passed by. These items existed quietly in my life, devoid of emotion.
I decided to observe them more closely during this relatively still period. Each day, I selected one object and documented it through illustration. As I recorded these objects, I infused my own emotions into the artwork, while the objects themselves, along with their origins and stories, provided me with a sense of calm. I named this artistic endeavor “One Object a Day,” a title that plays on the Chinese homophone “物” (object) and “悟” (enlightenment). Through documenting these objects, I also found personal insight, helping me navigate this period of isolation and look forward to the new life ahead.

决定搬离居住工作九年的城市北京之际,赶上了全球的新冠疫情爆发。我们从老家回来,得知要被隔离居家一段日子。我们的搬离计划也只得后延一段日子。
在居家的日子里,我开始留意身边原本普通的事物,它们可能是别人送的,也有可能是一个我用得得心应手的工具亦或者是一次冲动购买的没什么用处的物件,亦或一家时常路过的街口店家的招牌、橱窗道具。它们静静地存在于我的生活中,毫无情感。
我决定在这个相对凝固的时间里,去留意他们,每天找一个物品,以插画的形式给它们做一个记录,可能我再纪录的同时也将我的情绪赋予画面,同时物件毫无情绪以及他的由来及背后的信息,也将给予我平静。
我用了一个特别讨巧的名称“一日一物”来命名此次的艺术纪录行为,“物”也是中文谐音的“悟”;通过对“物”记录同时自己也获得了“悟”,以度过这一段隔离居家的日子,期待新的生活到来。
